The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute

In December, 2014, the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University (OSU) Wexner Medical Center opened its doors.  The $750 million project included a $100 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration and houses inpatient, outpatient, research, and ambulatory services and a radiation oncology unit.  Originally started in 2006, the project underwent many major architectural and design changes, including incorporating OSU’s signature scarlet and gray colors before its completion.

There are 306 private patient rooms with family-zoned spaces.  The hallways, corridors, staff and patient rooms all have access to natural light and the impressive views. Many rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and offer patients the ability to watch OSU football games.

Below are a few pictures of this new facility from an article in Healthcare Design Magazine.  To view all of the pictures and read the entire article, click here.

Multiple studies were done to learn how best to bring in natural light and views to the outdoors into the patient rooms without adding glare. The final design solution was a combination of shades and glazing types on the floor-to-ceiling windows. Photo: Brad Feinknopf
