Prebys Cardiovascular Institute at Scripps Memorial Hospital

Healthcare Design Magazine recently had a feature and photo tour on the Prebys Cardiovascular Institute in La Jolla, California on the campus of Scripps Memorial Hospital.  This facility opened in November, 2014 and began admitting patients in March.  The $456-million, seven-story facility features 108 inpatient beds in private rooms, 59 intensive care beds, six operating rooms including hybrid operating rooms, and three advanced technology cardiac catheterization labs with space to add three more.  The interior is inspired by the light, color, and textures of the surrounding natural landscape.  This facility is the intial phase in of a 25-year master plan for the La Jolla campus.

On every patient floor, central nurses’ stations are located at junction points along the curved corridor. Large circular skylights and a well-defined ceiling plane help to organize the space, while both the ceiling and floor patterns provide intuitive wayfinding cues.
