Park Nicollet’s Family Birthing Center

In St. Louis Park, Minnesota, they have recently renovated the Park Nicollet’s Family Birthing Center on the Methodist Hospital campus.  The original building was built in 1957 and required complicated renovations in order to appeal to new parents.

The new center improved the triage, labor/delivery/recovery (LDR), antepartum, postpartum, special care nursery, and c-section rooms. In addition, they added a welcome area, serpentine public entry corridor, concierge station, family lounge, and café.  A multifunctional conference/community room provides space for presentations to prospective parents, education programs, and staff meetings.

New LDR suites with water-birth capability were created by combining two existing postpartum rooms. Medical equipment, trash, and soiled linens are concealed within custom cabinetry. Large postpartum suites were developed by updating existing LDR rooms. Existing procedure lighting and medical gasses for baby were maintained to offer the flexibility for additional LDR capacity. Wall-mounted modular furniture systems accommodate patient, family, and staff needs and medical equipment is hidden within a custom headwall unit that also integrates patient-controlled lighting.
