Featured Project: Ronald McDonald House, Family Room

The Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Northern Nevada has been providing a home away from home for families whose children are receiving medical treatment in the Reno area. One of the key aspects of the organization’s mission is to provide comfort and support for these families during challenging times. So when the organization identified a need to remodel their kitchens in order to better serve their guests, they turned to Marie Wikoff, healthcare design expert and founder of Wikoff Design Studio. Ronald McDonald House Project

The project, which was completed in 2014, aimed to increase storage capacity, improve maintenance, and create a more comfortable environment for the families that rely on the RMHC Northern Nevada. To achieve these goals, Marie Wikoff, of Wikoff Design Studio employed a range of services, including interior design, space planning, construction documents, lighting design, and furniture specifications.

The first step in the project was to assess the existing kitchens and identify areas for improvement. Marie Wikoff worked closely with the RMHC Northern Nevada to understand their specific needs and challenges, ensuring that the redesigned kitchens would address these effectively.

Space planning played a crucial role in the remodel, as the team aimed to maximize the use of the available space while improving functionality. By reconfiguring the layout and carefully choosing the placement of appliances and storage units, the team was able to significantly increase the storage capacity of the kitchens. This not only allowed for more efficient organization but also reduced clutter, making it easier for volunteers to maintain a clean and organized space.

Creating a Comfortable Environment

In addition to improving storage, Wikoff also focused on creating a more comfortable environment for the families staying at the RMHC Northern Nevada. This involved carefully selecting lighting fixtures, which were not only functional but also contributed to a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The lighting design played a crucial role in ensuring that the kitchens were well-lit and inviting, providing a sense of comfort and home.

Furniture Selection

Furniture specifications were another integral part of the project. Wikoff sourced durable and functional furniture pieces that would withstand the demands of a busy kitchen. From tables and chairs for dining areas to storage solutions and workstations, every piece of furniture was chosen to enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of the space.

Projects like these highlight the immense value that professional design services can bring to organizations and communities. By utilizing a range of services, including interior design, space planning, construction documents, lighting design, and furniture specifications, Wikoff Design Studio was able to transform the kitchens at the RMHC Northern Nevada into spaces that are both functional and welcoming. This not only benefits the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House but also contributes to the overall mission of the organization in providing comfort and support during difficult times.
