Milton District Hospital Expands to Accommodate Growing Population
The town of Milton, Ontario, Canada, with a population of more than 100,000 people, experienced a period of rapid growth, including an influx of young and old with diverse religious and cultural backgrounds. The increase and changing diversity of its residents were important catalysts for the redevelopment and expansion of the Milton District Hospital.
The project, designed by B+H Architects (Toronto), roughly tripled the size of the hospital, adding 330,000 square feet to the existing 125,000-square-foot facility, for a total of 455,000 square feet. The inpatient bed count also grew, from 63 to 129 rooms, with 80 percent of the rooms private accommodations to help improve infection control and patient privacy.
The original hospital was repurposed for lower-acuity functions, while the addition houses new services, including emergency, imaging, critical care, surgery, rehabilitation, day procedures, birthing, materials management, sterile processing, and facilities maintenance as well as a NICU, medical and surgical inpatient units, and a kitchen.
Some of the beds in the original building will continue to be used for rehabilitation and the old clinical services will be adapted to function as clinics. Substantial completion of the project was reached in April 2017 and the new facility opened to the public on October 1.
