Integrated Healthcare for Mental and Behavioral Health

There is a new trend emerging in mental and behavioral healthcare. Gone are the days of the separate units for the mentally ill or the “institution”. Architects and designers are creating behavioral healthcare clinics, emergency room crisis centers, and new freestanding facilities.
St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton in Hamilton, Ontario opened up the Margaret and Charles Juravinski Centre for Integrated Healthcare in February, 2014. This facility has 850,000 square feet with more than 300 psychiatric beds and provides mental health and addiction services together under one roof in a modern and comfortable setting. They also have an ambulatory care center with diagnostic, imaging, and outpatient medical services.
The Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a freestanding facility that houses seven inpatient units, divided according to specialized patient populations, including adults, seniors, child and adolescent, and substance abuse/co-occurring disorders. They have a mix of single and double bedroom units.
