Hospital in the Park
NATIONWIDE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Ranked as the fifth largest children’s hospital in the U.S., Nationwide Children’s is the primary pediatric health care provider for 37 counties, with more than 800 medical staff members and 4,500 employees. Faced with increasing volumes, the institution needed to replace its aging facility to accommodate growing patient needs.
STRATEGY:
Nationwide Children’s urban campus suffered from obstructed access and isolation. A strategic decision to reorient the entrance to the campus, rebuild the patient and community experience with the hospital and create a stronger impact on the delivery of children’s care regionally all directed toward a complete hospital replacement.
TRANSFORMATION:
With the oldest park in Columbus adjacent to the hospital and bounded by disadvantaged neighborhoods, the opportunity was seized to not only expand building capacity, but also give back to the community by creating a “hospital in the park.” The project added six acres of public green space, providing expanded scenic areas for escape, setting a welcoming context for the campus and creating a new neighborhood identity.
