Featured Renovation: Suburban Office Building Turned Into Modern Cancer Care Center
What happens when you take a former suburban office building and turn it into a state-of-the-art modern cancer care center? Just ask the Perkins + Will design team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Monmouth in New Jersey.
Late 2016, MSK opened a freestanding outpatient treatment site that was welcomed by the community. The state-of-the-art facility allows New Jersey residents the ability to seek care closer to home.
In order to accomplish the project, the design team reimagined a vacant 1980’s suburban office building transforming the space into a modern cancer care center.
One of the biggest design challenges was bringing natural light into the otherwise poorly-lit building. To accomplish this, the design team cut into the existing office building and installed a seamless glass wall. To further improve the view, they built a large courtyard that can be seen from each treatment room.
In addition to daylighting, the healthcare designers at Perkins + Will enhanced the space with elements of warm natural materials, furnishings and details. The design concept was based on a “walk through the woods.”
Lastly, using data to drive design decisions, the team created treatment spaces that provided patients with privacy options placing an emphasis on changing rooms, exam rooms, consultation rooms and infusion therapy suites.
The renovation ensures the comfort of patients and their families at every phase of cancer treatment. What’s best is the accessibility, providing a full-service treatment facility close to home. Visit the MSK Monmouth website.
