A Child’s Imagination Inspires Elements of Design

What are the elements that come into play when a child’s home becomes the hospital? What types of design can distract a child’s mind from the fear of needles, isolation, and strangers?

In the design shown here, the use of bright primary colors and lots of spheres create a subconscious orbit of appeal that is parallel with a new box of crayons, brilliant balloons, hard candy, bubbles, planets, bouncing balls, and the open spaces of a playground, with foot trails of yellow and green. Sparking the imagination of patients has proven to assist in the healing process. It also acts as a form of distraction which can help children coupe with traumatic environments and situations.

The rooms are bright and light, with plenty of room for family to pull up a chair, health care workers to access the patient and play areas that provide an assortment of friendly toys and activities.

The use of paint, contrast and light, help make an atmosphere that will cheer and uplift a child during a difficult time.

With Renown’s Children’s Hospital initiative, Marie Wikoff and the team created an environment that children would feel more comfortable to be in while also accommodating family and staff.
