Charleston Area Medical Center’s New Cancer Center
In May, 2015, Charleston Area Medical Center opened it’s new cancer center in Southern West Virginia in order to bring a new way to fight cancer to the area. The 1110,000 square foot, three-story building contains radiation oncology, medical oncology, clinical trials, medical office space, imaging, and a breast center all under one roof.
The main goal of the entire building is to bring people and nature together. The lobby is a great room which is inspired by Charleston’s Capitol Dome and contains local artwork, a stone fireplace, a baby grand player piano, and a monumental staircase. From the great room, there is access to all support functions, including a counseling area, boutique, retail pharmacy, café, community room, and a healing garden.
The outdoor areas consist of healing gardens, green terraces, and views towards West Virginia’s mountain ranges. These serve as positive distractions and provide green spaces in which to relax and retreat. All patient treatment areas and major circulation components directly connect to the outdoor areas.
