Calming Atmosphere
Art is calming because it helps to provide a distraction from worries and helps patients to focus on something else. Artwork can also create a feeling of hope and positivity.
Sparking Conversations
Artwork can spark conversations by providing a visual point of focus that can be used as a conversation starter. Art can also be used to help patients open up and share their feelings in a safe and supportive environment. Additionally, artwork can serve as a reminder of the patient’s progress and help to boost their confidence in their ability to heal and recover.
One example of art sparking a conversation is at the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic in Seattle. As the new clinic was being designed, community members expressed that they didn’t want the space to feel clinical. In response, the design team wrapped the space in murals by local artists that honor the clinic’s legacy and celebrate its cultural heritage. (Source)
