RENO, NV — More than 7,000 families have stayed at the Ronald McDonald House in Reno since 1987. As a result, renovations are underway to improve the house for families caring for a sick and hospitalized child.

“This is a life-saving thing for us,” said Christie Johnson. “This is the difference between us losing me and the baby and being safe.“

Johnson is having complications with her pregnancy. She lives in Battle Mountain, NV with her family and the closest trauma hospital is here in Reno.

“There is no way we would be able to afford to be here or just try to get here in a frantic panicked hurry because we live so far away,” Johnson said.

Families can stay at the Ronald McDonald house for as long as they need free of charge.

It was that kind of generosity that motivated Reno resident Steve Brennan to become a long-time benefactor to the house. When he passed away last June, his wish was for friends and family to donate to the Ronald McDonald house instead of sending flowers.

“That brought in over $70,000 in his honor,” said Marty Ozer, Manager.

The money will be spent on upgrading the kitchen to be able to feed families that occupy the 12 rooms. Local companies like Q and D Construction are helping in the remodeling costs along with corporatepartners like Southwest Airlines but it is the small donations that can really help the house be a comforting home.

“Small donations are a lifeblood because those canisters at the McDonald’s throw about a $100,000 dollars a year to us,” said Ozer. “It all adds up, anything, volunteer, money, baked goods, we can use it. “

The Reno Ronald McDonald House will be hosting breakfast with Santa on December 13th from 8:30 a.m. at the Grove at South Creek. Tickets start at $10 with the proceeds benefiting the house.
